About North Dakota (ND)
North Dakota is in the U.S. region called the Great Plains. It is near the middle of North America and has a stone marker in Rugby marking the ‘Geographic Center of the North American Continent’. The state has an area of 70,762 square miles (183,273 km2) making it the 19th largest state in the USA.
Half of the state, to the west, is the Great Plains and the northern Badlands to the westside of the Missouri River. White Butte, the states highest point at 3,506 feet (1,069 m), and Theodore Roosevelt National Park located in the Badlands. Part of the the Missouri River forms Lake Sakakawea, the third largest man-made lake in the United States, above the Garrison Dam.
The middle of the state is divided into the Drift Prairie and the Missouri Plateau. East is the flat Red River Valley originally the bottom of glacial Lake Agassiz and Devils Lake. The area has a great deal of agriculture industry supported by the rich fertile soil which drains into the Red River as it flows north into Lake Winnipeg.
Eastern North Dakota is mostly flat but there are big hills and many buttes in the western part of North Dakota. The state is mostly covered in grassland and crops cover most of eastern North Dakota reducing to the center and farther west.
North Dakota was populated for thousands of years before the coming of Europeans by Native American peoples. The original tribes included the Mandan people (circa 11th C) and the Hidatsa several hundred years later. Both tribes created villages on the Missouri River tributaries in what is now west central North Dakota. Crow Indians travelled the plains, to visit and trade with the Hidatsas after splitting from the tribe sometime in the 17th century. Other tribes formed by division later including the Dakota people – the Lakota, the Santee and the Yanktonai.
Travelling south the Assiniboine and Plains Cree people visited for trade and on occasion for war. The forbears of Shoshone Indians who live in modern Wyoming and Montana may have carried out attacks on Indian enemies as far east as the Missouri. A Cheyenne group lived in a village of earth lodges at the lower Sheyenne River for several decades during the 18th century. Sometime in 1780 they left the area following attacks by Crees, Assiniboines and Chippewas and crossed the Missouri. The few remaining Sotaio Indians living east of Missouri River met the uprooted Cheyennes and shortly them across the Missouri to live among them south of Cannonball River. The Cheyenne and the Sutaio combined into one tribe became mounted buffalo hunters with ranges mainly outside North Dakota.
The Dakota Territory was not widely settled by Europeans until late in the 19th century. At that time railroads were being constructed into the region. A combined bill for statehood for North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, and Washington was passed in February 1889. North Dakota and South Dakota were admitted to the Union in November 1889.
